What are the warning signs of chronic sinusitis?

Most people assume that their pesky little sinus infection will eventually go away, and most of the time it will; however, what happens when it doesn’t? If you’ve been living with these symptoms for more than 12 weeks then you could be dealing with chronic sinusitis,

  • Facial pain and pressure
  • Nasal congestion
  • Blocked sinuses
  • Headaches
  • Referred pain in the upper teeth
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Fatigue
  • Earaches
  • Stuffy nose
  • Nasal discharge (often green or yellow in color)
  • Facial tenderness

When should I consider balloon sinuplasty?

Often, the first course of action when your turn to our Chesterfield, MO, ENT doctor is for us to find simple but effective ways to manage your symptoms. Some patients find relief through prescription or over-the-counter medications, as well as simple home care and lifestyle changes; however, you may want to consider balloon sinuplasty if,

  • You aren’t experiencing symptom relief from medications or other treatment options
  • You experience recurring or chronic sinus infections
  • You have trouble breathing out of your nose
  • Your sinus infections are severe

How does balloon sinuplasty work?

After the nasal cavity is thoroughly numbed, we will insert a very thin catheter through the nose. Attached to the catheter is a deflated balloon. Once the catheter is guided into the nasal passages, the balloon is inflated. As the balloon inflates, it will safely and effectively open up the passageways to allow mucus, bacteria, and pus to properly drain. Even once the catheter is removed the nasal passages will remain open.
